Define your question:

We want to talk about the impacts of climate change, and how we can implement these ideas into our curriculum. We’re choosing this topic because it has a major societal and world impact on all of our students’ lives and is very rarely talked about and explored in math classes.

Three Concepts:

1.      1. Impact of climate change and how the topic of climate change can change the curriculum positively

2.      2. Evaluating your own (students’) impact on climate change

3.      3. Awareness and how the students can create change in their own lives

We chose the topic of climate change because it hasn’t really been touched on within the math curriculum but can be applicable in many areas and can allow students to have a deeper understanding with research. We have touched on concepts such as ‘big numbers’ in class, and climate change may be able to make sense of big numbers. As well, we can simplify, create examples, and give students the opportunity to think about their own impact on the climate, as I remember going through school and not ever knowing what impact I had. Everyone is impacted by climate change and it’s worse if we as teacher and facilitators of knowledge ignore it and don’t address it with our students. We can also evaluate the impact of intersectionality of other courses may have as climate change is often talked about with science and social studies. If possible, maybe we could collaborate with other teachers.
